What’s infill sand?

Infill is a sand that gets spread between the synthetic grass blades on an artificial turf application. While oftentimes overlooked, this product is incredibly important to both the look and longevity of the project.

How much infill sand do I use?

The general rule of thumb is to use 1.5 - 3 lb. of infill sand per square foot on an artificial turf project and ¼ - ½ lb. per square foot on a putting green. You should always refer to the instructions on the bag for the manufacturer’s guidelines on quantity and installation.

5 Main Benefits Provided By Infill

The best installation method for artificial turf includes using a layer of infill sand. Here are five important benefits your project will gain by doing so.

1. The turf will be sufficiently weighted down.

One of the primary functions of infill sand is that it adds ballast to the turf, or helps to weigh it down. This will help prevent shifting or any wrinkling.

2. The turf blades will stay upright.

Another important function of infill sand is that it helps prevent the turf blades from flopping over. Upright turf blades not only look aesthetically pleasing and more natural, as well as promote better air circulation as well.

3. Infill reduces moss and mildew.

As mentioned above, infill sand helps keep the turf blades upright. This increased opportunity for good air circulation will ultimately decrease the chances of mold, mildew, and strong odors from forming.

4. The surface will have better shock absorption.

In addition to creating stability, infill sand will make the surface feel more like real grass and provide a level of shock absorption, too.

5. The turf backing will be better protected.

A key to maximizing the lifespan of artificial turf is keeping the backing intact. Using a proper layer of infill sand will adequately protect the turf backing from being punctured or torn.

What Gator X-Turf Infill Sand is right for you?

There are three infill sand options within the Alliance Gator X-Turf Collection: Beige, Green, and Zeo-White. Each of these is composed of round aggregates, which will stay loose and fluffy and help with drainage. (Note: Round aggregates also won’t damage the turf backing or nearby surfaces should it get tracked around.) All three infill sands are environmentally-friendly and safe for children and pets.

Let’s now take a look at some more specific features of each.

  • Gator Beige infill sand is the least expensive option. It’s a 100% natural product, and it’s naturally antimicrobial, too. Because of its higher mesh size (or smaller particle size), this infill sand is ideal for use with the Gator X-Turf Putting Green Blend.

  • Gator Green infill sand is coated with a resin and will stay permanently green. The color blends seamlessly with all turf options. Gator Green infill sand also contains a biocide with antimicrobial qualities. It’s recommended for both Gator X-Turf Premium and Classic blends.

  • Gator Zeo-White is formulated to absorb ammonia from animal urine and neutralize odors. It also helps provide a cooling effect on the surface. It’s ideal for pet surfaces featuring the Gator X-Turf Classic blend and Premium blend. (Based on its shorter pile height, the Classic blend is recommended for pet surfaces, as it will be easier to clean.)
