How to prepare base for artificial turf

STEP 1

Before getting started, you’ll want to reference the latest version of the Gator X-Turf Technical Data Sheet (TDS). Sheets for each Gator X-Turf blend can be found on the Alliance Gator website.

Step 2

Excavate to prepare a solid base by densely compacting 4-6″ (10-15 cm) of crushed stone. Be sure to remove any roots and weeds. The levelness and desired shape of your subbase should match your finished grade and allow for proper drainage.

Step 3

Place down a layer of geotextile (Gator Fabric GF 4.4). Ensure the fabric seam is overlapped by 12” (30 cm), and it’s overlapped with the pitch and flow of water, like roofing shingles.

Step 4

The foundation should be built with 4-6” (10-15 cm) of compacted 0-3/4” (0-20 mm) crushed stone. Rake and level evenly to achieve your desired grade and slope. Wet the surface and then run a plate compactor in lifts of 2-3″ (5-8 cm) over the entire surface to compact the crushed stone in place. In restricted areas, you can use a hand tamper or a jumping jack.

Step 5

Examine for any high or low spots and adjust before proceeding with a final 3/4” layer of stone dust. The final layer of your foundation must be compacted and leveled, and sloped to be reflective of the finished yard. The smoother your base, the smoother the Gator X-Turf will feel underfoot. This will lead to the best looking, and longest lasting installation.

Your foundation is now ready for a roll of Gator X-Turf!
