Why Efflorescence Cleaning Happens After A Poly Sand Installation

Efflorescence cleaning must happen after the installation of polymeric sand. In this post, we’ll explain why it’s imperative it happens in this order.

“Why do you recommend cleaning efflorescence after new polymeric sand is installed? Wouldn’t it damage or weaken the joints?”

This is a question we are often asked by hardscape contractors. There are three important reasons why applying an efflorescence cleaner should happen after the installation of polymeric sand. Here’s what they are.

1. The cleaning process can damage the joints.

While the polymeric sand itself won’t be negatively affected by an efflorescence cleaner, the application of water and the scrubbing action required to use the cleaner can damage the joints if they haven’t fully cured. Polymeric sand generally cures in 48 hours, but it could take more or less time depending on the weather conditions. The sand within the joints should be fully cured prior to using an efflorescence cleaner.

2. Filled joints prevent run-off.

It’s very difficult to clean efflorescence from pavers without sand in the joints. The cleaner will run down into the joints and disappear before it’s given the chance to do its job. Having the joints filled allows the cleaner to sit on the surface, and react with the efflorescence, to remove it as intended.

3. The cleaner will remove poly sand residue.

When installing any polymeric sand, there will be some residue that gets left on the surface. (Note: If the sand is installed correctly, there should be nothing more than clear polymers left on the surface.) If the pavers are going to be sealed, this residue needs to be removed. Using an efflorescence cleaner will effectively accomplish this, while properly preparing the pavers for the application of a sealer.
